ITRI-99-12 Language Sampling for Multilingual Lexical Representation
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper discusses the issue of language sampling in the development of a framework for multilingual lexical representation (MLR). The approach to MLR adopted here aims at developing a hierarchical lexical structure which permits sharing of information across languages. The multilingual nature of such a lexical hierarchy raises methodological and theoretical issues for its design and development. In order to solve these issues, different models will be studied and implemented. To make sure that the resulting framework will be generally valid covering all variants encountered in natural language it is necessary to use a language sample that explores as much as possible the full range of forms and constructions that can occur. This paper shows how a representative subset of languages can be selected.

ITRI - 00 - 36 Phonological feature based multilingual lexical description Carole
This paper presents a framework for compactly describing word forms in terms of phonological features. Using a highly modular default-inheritance based approach, the framework supports the description of lexical generalisations traditionally modelled as morphology and phonology in a single phonology-based representation. This representation is more uniform and more detailed than previous approa...
متن کاملITRI-00-09 Incorporating Metaphonemes in a Multilingual Lexicon
This paper describes a framework for multilingual inheritance-based lexical representation which allows sharing of information across languages at all levels of linguistic description. The paper focuses on phonology. It explores the possibility of establishing a phoneme inventory for a group of languages in which language-specific phonemes function as “allophones” of newly defined metaphonemes....
متن کاملMental Representation of Cognates/Noncognates in Persian-Speaking EFL Learners
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental representation of cognate and noncognate translation pairs in languages with different scripts to test the prediction of dual lexicon model (Gollan, Forster, & Frost, 1997). Two groups of Persian-speaking English language learners were tested on cognate and noncognate translation pairs in Persian-English and English-Persian directions with...
متن کاملITRI-03-03 From Machine Readable Dictionaries to Lexical Databases: the CONCEDE Experience
It is commonly held that machine-readable dictionaries play a key role in bootstrapping effective wide-coverage language-technology, especially in less well-resourced languages. However, while the linguistic knowledge they contain is clearly necessary for this goal, it is far from clear that the format it is presented in is sufficient to reach it. A crucial step in the deployment of such resour...
متن کاملAn Interlingual Lexical Organisation Based on Acceptions From the PARAX mock-up to the NADIA system
Many projects are conducted to develop multilingual lexical databases. Some of these projects use an interlingual approach (KBMT-89, EDR, ...), where others choose a bilingual approach (Multilex, ...). This paper presents an interlingual approach based on acceptions (word-senses) aiming at the development of a multilingual lexical database management system: NADIA. With this approach, the inter...
